Taco trucks are a staple in California. They’re quick, easy access, and always fresh. Here in DTSJ, there are two taco trucks just a block away from SJSU: Spartan Taco Truck and Antojitos.
Since coming to SJSU, Antojitos has been one of my go-to places to eat. When I was a first year, the truck was right across the street from my friend’s apartment complex; you could see the line and smell the food from their front steps. Anytime we were hungry, our first choice of the night would be Antojitos. I can’t tell you how many times we’d get cravings at 2AM and find ourselves in their lot. If someone has never been, I make sure I take them. I’ve even brought my dad (there’s a post on his Facebook if anyone would like proof).
There’s one thing on their menu that I will always, always, get and it’s their pupusas. If I could describe them in the simplest way possible, a pupusa is a meat and cheese pancake. You have to eat it fresh, otherwise it’s no good the morning after. You won’t get the same experience otherwise. People usually add cilantro, onions, or whatever sauce they prefer, but I like to eat it plain. I still remember the first time I had a pupusa; I only ordered it because the name sounded funny at the time. When I took my first bite, I knew I was a goner. The soft tortilla is blended beautifully with the cheese and the meat is mixed in so well, you’ll never get a bite with too much meat or too much cheese. I usually get al pastor meat, which is marinaded pork. Unlike the other meats, it gives an extra flavor to my pupusas. If you ever find yourself hungry and want to try something new, please visit Antojitos. You’ll thank me later.
