Cereal will always be an underrated food. It’s the type of food that you disregard for weeks on end, then suddenly crave it and finish a box in three days.
I recently have been going through a cereal phase, so I’ve been stocking up for shelter-in-place. This phase has been taking me on a trip down memory lane, as some of these cereal carried me through childhood, such as Frosted Flakes. I grew up eating this cereal often with my dad, so the nostalgic factor is why this cereal means so much tome. He would put frosted flakes in a warm tortilla topped with peanut butter. It’s an unusual combination, but it’s delicious. My dad was always mashing foods that you wouldn’t think would taste good together, like bananas with adobo. Special K Red Berry is also a nostalgic cereal for me. When I don’t feel like eating something too sweet, this is my go-to. It overall has a very light taste, so I can eat multiple bowls without feeling full. This cereal doesn’t get soggy quickly like other cereals do, so it’s able to maintain its crunch. Compared to other brands that use dried fruit in their cereal, the strawberry bits in Special K Red Berry taste authentic and sweet, not bitter.
Vanilla Almond Crunch Flakes remind me of better times in my life.I like this cereal for the same reasons that I like Special K Berry. It’s not too sweet and is very light. I normally don’t like eating nuts, but I make an exception for this cereal. When I played tennis back in high school, I used to buy a box of this cereal whenever we were away for a tournament. Throughout the tournament, I would just munch on Vanilla Almond Flakes while waiting for my match. Eating this cereal makes me nostalgic in the same way that the regular Frosted Flakes do. Lastly, I’ve been buying a lot of Oreo O’s during this shelter-in-place. This cereal is my guilty pleasure. I’d never seen this cereal until I moved back to the states for college. Growing up, I was obsessed with Oreos and ate them all the time, so finding this was like finding a treasure chest. This was a cereal I knew my mom wouldn’t approve of, given how much sugar it has, so I always feel guilty whenever I ear it. Despite that, I still buy the extra large box when grocery shopping.
