My Food History

I’d like to say that I lived a diverse lifestyle. I’m a Filipino-American who grew up on a US Military Base in Japan. With this, I was lucky enough to experience 3 different cultures throughout my life: Filipino, American, and Japanese. Consequently enough, this influenced what I ate growing up.

At home, my mom would cook Filipino food for my family. Living in Japan allowed us to travel back to the Philippines often, so I was lucky enough to taste authentic Filipino food. My lola would take us out into the city to try their street food. I still remember buying orange juice from a baggie.

Living on a military base allowed me to experience both Japanese and American food. On base, they had fast food restaurants such as Popeye’s and Taco Bell. When out and about, I’d be able to stop by a food stand and order taiyaki for 200 yen ($2.50) and 80 yen (90 cents) yakitori on the way home.
